East Coast Havelet Wall

Havelet Wall

Havelet Wall

Havelet Wall is the longest traverse done to date in the island. It is situated in town and forms the northern wall of Havelet Bay between the slaughterhouse slipway and Castle Cornet (Perry’s Guide P.25 H1/G2)

To get there follow signs to the aquarium from the sea front in town. At the small roundabout at the end of the bus terminus there is a slipway to the beach (usually with an ice-cream van at the top!) The wall is immediately on your left as you go down the slipway. To get to the far end either walk along the top of the wall or follow the road out to castle cornet. Please park in a sensible place. If you get to the bottom of the hill by the brewery then you’ve gone too far. The wall is 50ft high in places with some reefs exposed at low tide, so it’s best to get into deep water soloing and do it at high tide. It is possible to escape upwards, but it’s a good idea to have someone with a long sling you can use to pull up on in case the cracks have been pointed up at the top. Don’t try it if you can’t swim, as it is very sustained (1000ft long). No grade has been offered yet other than “It wasn’t that hard”, and it has only been done about six or seven times (to my knowledge) starting at the castle cornet end. Technical english 5a/b maximum. Logical continuations include the wall below the parking spaces on the right of the slaughterhouse slipway or the breakwater out from Castle cornet.
